Congratulations to Dr. Nancy Edwards who was presented with the prestigious YMCA/YWCA Women of Distinction Award for the Science, Research and Technology category, on May 17, 2007. On June 8, 2007 Professor Edwards received an Honorary Doctorate from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Nancy Edwards, Principal Scientist of the Institute of Population Health, is the recipient of the 2006-2007 University of Ottawa Excellence in Research Award. The award focuses attention on research being conducted at the University of Ottawa. Professor Edwards received this year’s prize for her outstanding work and research in community health. We extend our warmest congratulations to Dr. Edwards!

Alain (Al) Mayhew -- Review Group Coordinator for Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Review Group -- has been selected as the recipient of the Ontario Physiotherapy Association’s Special Award for Research that he will receive on March 23. The award is a symbol of appreciation for demonstration of leadership in scholarly activities and significant contributions to research within the physiotherapy profession.

Dr. William Hogg along with Dr. Clare Liddy as Co-PI has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Ministry of Health Promotion of Ontario to pilot a chronic illness patient registry focusing on cardiovascular health in 2 family physician offices. One of these offices will be a computerized office and one will not. Through this pilot we hope to learn how to implement patient registries for chronic illness care in family physician offices.

Dr. Dan Lane, a Professor at the University of Ottawa School of Management, along with Carol Amaratunga as Co-Investigator and other colleagues from 6 Canadian universities were awarded the OMRN under a joint initiative program a networking grant of $1 million over the next two years to foster networking and research to enhance Canada’s oceans agenda.

Join us in congratulating Caroline Andrew, a professor with the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ottawa and Affiliate Scientist of the Institute, who received the Ontario Francophonie Award (Francophile of the Year) from the government of Ontario during a special ceremony in Ottawa on November 20. The goal of these new awards from the government of Ontario is to honour people who have contributed significantly to advancing the French language and culture in Ontario. Congratulations Caroline Andrew and thank you for your contribution to our community.

Principal Scientist of IPH, Bill Hogg has been nominated Family Medicine Researcher of the Year by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

This award recognizes a Family Medicine researcher who has made original contributions to research and knowledge-building for Family Medicine in Canada. Their contribution may encompass any specific aspect of Family Medicine Research from clinical to health services to education. This award has been designed to honour a Family Medicine researcher who has been a pivotal force in the definition, development and dissemination of concepts central to the discipline of family medicine.

This award will be presented during Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2006 in Quebec City, November 2 – 4, at which time the recipient will deliver a special presentation. The recipient of this award will receive complimentary FMF registration ($700 value) plus $2,000 to offset travel and other expenses for attending FMF 2006.

The University of Ottawa is pleased to be hosting the Sixth Working Session, September 19-20, 2006, of the international collaboration with the European Union Coordination Action project ‘Assessment of the vulnerabilities of modern societies to terrorist acts employing radiological, biological or chemical agents with the view to assist in developing preventive and suppressive crisis management strategies’ (ASSRBCVUL), in the context of our CRTI project ‘Psychosocial Risk Assessment and Management (P-RAM) Tools to Enhance Response to CBRN Attacks and Threats in Canada, led by Louise Lemyre, Principal Scientist at IPH.
